What are the risks for developing gum disease?

Tobacco use and vaping:

Outside of insufficient home care, tobacco use and vaping are the most important risk factor for gum disease.

Diabetes:

Gum disease is more common in diabetics.

Gum disease makes it more difficult for diabetics to control their blood sugar if it is not treated.

When gum disease is treated, diabetics have better blood sugar control and are less likely to develop problems from their condition.

Stress:

Significant stress may negatively affect your immune system and greatly lower your resistance to gum disease.

Poor oral hygiene:

Bacteria are often maintained under control by the body's natural defenses and proper oral hygiene habits like daily brushing (2 times a day for 2 minutes) and flossing.

However without good dental hygiene, bacteria may build up to the point which they cause oral infections including gum disease and tooth decay.

Obesity and unhealthy diet:

Obesity and periodontal disease are usually associated with increased sugar and carbohydrate intake.

Another connection between obesity and periodontal disease is lifestyle factors that are prevalent in obese people.

For long-term dental health, your teeth and gums require specific nutrients to grow and maintain strength. If your diet is inadequate in important nutrients, your mouth tissues may not be able to fight infections that lead to periodontal disease and tooth decay.
